Hotel Review: The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences

Hi, Loves! I’m sharing my experience of the Athenaeum Hotel in Mayfair, London.
My boyfriend, Sammy and I spent our 1-year anniversary having a staycation at the Athenaeum hotel. We started seeing each other from the 3rd November 2016 after a night of dancing and drinks and have been inseparable ever since. At the Athenaeum we received bespoke spa treatments, relaxed with drinks at the bar, and ended the day with dinner at the Galvin restaurant.

THE BAR AT THE ATHENAEUM:

The bar is a relaxed environment and great for a casual meeting or a pre-dinner drink.  The signature cocktails are truly lovely and the bartenders very knowledgeable.  The bar is dimly-lit and comfortable with plush sofas, private nooks and surrounded by the hotel’s ‘living wall’ of green plants. We had so much fun at this bar and chatted with the incredibly friendly bartenders who made us feel very relaxed from the beginning of the service to the end.

THE SPA:

The spa at the Athenaeum is a small, intimate space which caters to a small number of people with bespoke treatments. Located inside the spa were two Jacuzzi baths. Sadly, one tub was broken with the jets not functioning. Additionally, there was a Turkish aromatic steam room and an Electric sauna and both were adequate for two people at a time.

Unfortunately, we did not have the most relaxing experience. To be clear – all of the staff involved in the booking process and in greeting us at reception were perfectly lovely. Everyone was incredibly professional, friendly, and reasonably competent. We received full body scrubs and a REN facial in the same room next to each other. However, the waiting rooms are quite small and the changing/shower/toilet room is even more compact. This was an absolute nightmare. I mustn’t have been the only one who was annoyed because other women who were trying to use the changing room areas were also visibly irked. There was not enough locker space, or space to physically move around and properly use any of the amenities, such as shower and hair appliances. It would be nice to have the facilities of a larger day spa or hotel, but unfortunately as I understood this is a boutique hotel spa. The experience was acceptable, but I cannot see myself returning to the spa again.

THE GALVIN RESTAURANT:

We received great service at the restaurant for dinner. The quality of the food was superb and we were delighted by our starters and steak dinner.

I would highly recommend visiting the bar for a relaxing drink and the restaurant for a delectable meal. Thank you to the staff at the Athenaeum hotel for making our 1-year anniversary special.

Where was your last staycation?
