How can you get a better night’s sleep? Are you going through those nights of tossing, turning, and worrying about tomorrow’s deadlines and tasks? Luckily, I’ve got some handy tools for every one of your sleepless nights. Let’s start with the basics.

Does aromatherapy work for sleep?

According to many studies and results – YES!
Falling asleep with the soothing effect of essential oils can have beneficial effects on sleep and cognitive function for many age groups.
The powerful aroma of oils can help with everything from boosting your mood to tackling all that the day throws your way. When combined with a good night time routine, essential oils can give you the warm, fuzzy feelings you need for a restful, delicious night of sleep. 

Which essential oils help you sleep?

Stop counting sheep and start using these essential oils when drifting off!
  1. Lavender essential oil
    The fresh scent of lavender will help you put tomorrow’s worries aside and let you enjoy the present moment.
    Turn your bottle of Lavender essential oil into roller to swipe this on your wrists and temples.
  2. Valerian essential oil
    Valerian is the solution to nights when you feel you’ll have a hard time getting comfortable again. With this sleep oil, you can ease any nervous tension that keeps you from dreaming sweet dreams and relieve occasional restlessness. Make your sheets the best things to slip into at the end of the day. Create a sleepy linen spray by combing 15 drops Valerian, 10 drops Clary Sage, 10 drops Cedarwood, and distilled water in a 200ml spray bottle.
  3. Roman Chamomile essential oil
    Add a drop of Roman Chamomile’s warm aroma to a body moisturiser and massage your tired muscles! Giving yourself a relaxing body massage or foot rub while reflecting on all you’re grateful for will help your body relax and wind down. You might even find yourself grateful for hectic days that make these small, tranquil moments feel much sweeter.
  4. Ylang Ylang essential oil
    You know what’s a real disaster waiting to happen? A miserable day followed by a fidgety night. When you have a bad day or worse night, Ylang Ylang is your saviour! Kick back with this exquisite floral oil and be assured that tomorrow will be so much better after you’ve slept well.
    Right before snuggles and bedtime, place a drop of this dreamy oil in your palm; then rub your hands together, cup your nose and mouth area, and breathe deeply into the sweet, soothing scent.
  5. Bergamot essential oil
    Let Bergamot essential oil ease you into joyful dreams. While you might not associate a bright citrus oil with sleeping, being positive right before falling asleep could be just what you need. You will find that you can let go of your nervous tension instantly with its sunny, uplifting scent.
    Put a few drops of this essential oil onto a tissue or eye pillow and tuck it next to your pillow.
  6. Frankincense essential oil
    An exhausting day leaves you wanting to flop on your bed as quickly as possible. Let’s get self-care done right! Take some time with Frankincense before sleep. A moment of clarity after a long day might be all you need to get a good night’s sleep. While you do a few simple yoga poses in the evening, diffuse Frankincense to relax your body. Rub this deep scent on your chest and let your mind empty of all the cares of the day.
  7. Cedarwood essential oil
    Do you find that sleeping in an unfamiliar bed is difficult for you? Cedarwood essential oil is your ultimate travel companion. No matter where you’re sleeping or where you’re going, it’s a great way to create a feel of home. Exactly how do you turn this balmy scent into your number-one packing necessity? In hotel rooms containing distracting odours, diffusers can help eliminate them. If you’re in a tent, you can apply it topically to give you a comforting scent that makes sleeping on the ground more comfortable.  
  8. Copaiba essential oil
    Make every night feel like a vacation with Copaiba! It has the perfect balmy, warm scent. Besides infusing your home with a comforting aroma, it can also ease away aches and pains that keep you from drifting off to sleep.
    The fact that you are at home doesn’t mean you cannot act like you are in a hotel! Get into a fluffy robe and watch your favorite show while you soak your feet. Relax in a basin of warm water with 1 tablespoon Epsom salt, 2 drops Copaiba, and 2 drops Stress Away.
  9. Rose essential oil
    Moreover, we can all agree that life gets messy and intense! After a long day, you deserve a little luxury. Enjoy a few drops of Rose essential oil! It’s the perfect before bedtime gift; we all need to pamper ourselves.
    How do you end the day with a good night’s sleep? For a sleep blend that will have you nodding off in no time, diffuse 1 drop Rose, 2 drops Frankincense, and 3 drops Copaiba.
  10. Vetiver essential oil
    Sleeping well today is the best thing you can do for tomorrow. It seems appropriate that vetiver oil can help you do just that. Using this earthy-scented oil when you need clarity and creativity, you’ll get in the mood for sleep so that you’re ready for the next day.
    We saved the best for last: a hot shower or bath! Prepare yourself for a wonderful tomorrow by adding 3 drops Vetiver, 3 drops Ylang Ylang, and 4 drops Cedarwood to warm bathwater. While you soak, set a few goals to accomplish tomorrow!
