Toxic Beauty: are chemicals in everyday products making us sick?

20/04/2020

Hey everyone, I’m getting real serious today with this article.
I have always loved using and reviewing different beauty products, skincare and all our everyday products that we put on our bodies.
Since starting to switch to a more low tox lifestyle, I’ve wanted to learn more about what is really in our products.

What’s really in our everyday household products, personal care and cosmetics?

As we are moving into 2020, we have seen that the beauty industry has been marketing their focus on “clean” and “sustainable” products — those that are safer for humans and environmentally conscious. Beauty companies are touted as “clean,” while celebs and moguls have turned their attention to their respective clean beauty lines.

But how clean is clean enough?

Have you have ever stopped to check out the ingredients on the labels of your everyday products? We often assume our products are safe, eco, natural or organic due to clever marketing and imagery. The scary truth is that these products are often full of hundreds of chemicals, Our bodies accumulate these chemicals and they can affect our bodies for a very long time. The reason some of these chemicals are deemed “safe” is because they aren’t mixed with others or we are told they are in small amounts, but when our bodies store these we can become walking chemical cocktails.

About 95 percent of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum. They include benzene derivatives – which are carcinogenic. In addition to aldehydes, toluene and many other known toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.

Unfortunately, 30 years later, toxic ingredients continue turn up in products we use and breathe in on a daily basis. Some of the worst toxic ingredients used in lotions, shampoos, laundry detergents, cleaning products and so much more include synthetic scents, often listed as on labels under the elusive blanket word “parfum” or “fragrance.” Many on the ingredients list are known or suspected endocrine disrupting compounds that negatively impact hormonal health. These effect can include weight gain and even set you up for diseases or health conditions decades down the line.
