Clean beauty and reducing chemical dangers

The importance of toxin awareness in the beauty industry

It makes me a bit sick to think about how much money I used to spend on beauty aka cosmetics, haircare and skincare.
I was a major sucker for the pretty marketing of the beauty products sold department stores, with their beautiful packaging and buzzword ‘magical’ ingredients that were going to make all of my beauty issues go away – ha !
After I became more aware of reducing my toxic chemical exposure, thanks to the advice of my skin specialist, I was even more fooled by the ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ beauty products popping up on the shelves.
Unfortunately, those claims were just good old greenwashing! Greenwashing is the process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company’s products are more environmentally sound.
Looking back on some of the ingredients contained in the skincare I was putting on my face and body makes me cringe.
Don’t struggle like I did, here’s a list of some of the top nasty ingredients to avoid in your beauty products with their potential side effects.
TIP: The biggest red flag in any skin care or personal care product is the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ on the labels.
Companies can hide hundreds of toxins behind those words and it’s legally protected as a ‘trade secret’ thanks to a little known loop hole!
You can use the ‘chemical maze’ or ‘think dirty’ mobile app or the EWG website to check what ingredients are in the things you may be currently using.
See the handy graphic below for chemicals to watch out for:

Have you experiences any side effects of adverse effects from your usual makeup and skincare products? I know I’ve definitely been subject to some skin reactions and also airway and mucosa effects.
